Project Management for Development

Course Description

This five-day course is designed to help participants learn concepts of participatory project management, within the context of social and community development. The course is a blend of the Project Management Institute (PMI) methodology and participatory approaches in the management of development projects.

The course is in complete compliance with the PMI® Guidebook, the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) 7th Edition. PM4D covers PMI’s processes: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closing projects; focusing on the ten knowledge areas essential to project management, interwoven with participatory approaches to management. This project management course, based on systems thinking, provides comprehensive training for beginners, mid-level and senior-level development professionals. After taking this introductory course, participants would be able prepare for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification examination.

This course is organized to follow the path of a normal project throughout its lifecycle. Further, the course will provide in-depth knowledge of tools, techniques, methodologies, processes and best practices to manage social sector as well as infrastructure projects.

Course Objectives

  • To provide a framework for structuring the Project Management Body of Knowledge to understand basic concepts of participatory project management, project development and project life cycles;
  • To identify the most generally accepted practices within the discipline of participatory project management;
  • To learn tools, techniques, best practices, methodologies and processes of participatory as well as PMI, project management;
  • To learn and apply the 5 process groups, 10 knowledge areas and 47 processes proposed by the PMI to the  management of development sector projects; and
  • To learn the basics of community and social mobilization/development through participatory projects;

Target Audience

The training workshop is primarily designed for representatives from governments, project teams, NGOs, foreign missions, multi- and bi-lateral donors/ development organizations, financial institutions, consultancies, academia, etc., who are directly or indirectly associated with the management of development projects in any region of the world.

Format

The course includes instructor presentations, case studies, individual and group exercises and group presentations. Certificates will be awarded on the final day of the course to those with full attendance.
