Maldives Local Governance and Decentralization

The IILD is supporting the Local Government Authority (LGA) of the Maldives, the national institution set up to implement the local governance system in the Maldives, to undertake networking and partnerships as part of efforts to ensure the success of decentralization.

These alliances are to provide international exposure and experience and to develop the capacity of the Local Government Authority (LGA) and that of 188 Local Councils in critical aspects, to bring about efficient and effective governance that will lead to the specific expected benefits of decentralization which are democratic decision making; improved living standards through economic, social and cultural development; empowerment; improved access to services; and improved environment for peace and prosperity.

The IILD, in many different regards, will be working with, and providing expert advice to, the LGA of the Maldives to actualize the objectives of the Networking and Partnership Building plans and others aspects of the LGA’s bid to promote participatory development, local governance, and effectiveness and efficiency in its decentralization.
